When Does SHSAT Registration Open?

Registration has opened in the first week of October in each of the last several admissions cycles, running through MySchools alongside the general high school application, and closing about three to four weeks later in late October.

These are the dates for the cycle that just completed, shown here as the most reliable pattern for what to expect. NYC DOE has not yet published exact dates for the next cycle as of this writing; check the official Specialized High Schools page directly each September, or set a MySchools account alert, rather than assuming these exact dates repeat.

How to Actually Register

Registration happens inside the same MySchools application where students apply to high school generally, not a separate system.

1. Create or log into a MySchools.nyc account (students can also register through their school counselor if they don't have independent access).
2. Complete the High School Application; the SHSAT registration step sits inside this same flow, not a separate portal.
3. Select and rank the specialized high schools you want to be considered for. Ranking matters: if you qualify for more than one school, you're placed at the highest-ranked one you cleared the cutoff for, not automatically the highest-cutoff school you qualified for.
4. Submit before the registration deadline. Testing tickets, which confirm the test date, time, and location, are released in MySchools a few weeks after registration closes.
5. Check MySchools for the ticket and confirm the assigned test site before test day; some students test at their own school (School Day administration), others at a separate weekend site.

Work with your child's school counselor if anything in the application stalls. Counselors handle SHSAT registration questions constantly during this window and can usually resolve access issues faster than a DOE support line.

What If You Missed the Registration Window?

Students who moved to New York City after the standard registration period closed may qualify for a separate summer SHSAT registration option, typically open through the end of July, with testing in early August.

This path is specifically for families who relocated to NYC too late to register during the standard fall window for the following year's cycle, not a general do-over for students who simply missed the deadline. If that describes your situation, contact a DOE Family Welcome Center or your new school's counselor immediately rather than waiting, since this option has its own tight internal deadline.

What Actually Happens on Test Day

The SHSAT is administered on DOE-provided computers, either at the student's home school on a School Day administration date, or at a separate testing site on one of the designated weekend dates. Students cannot use their own laptop or test from an unlisted location.

• Bring the printed or digital admission ticket from MySchools, plus photo ID if testing at a site other than your home school.
• Arrive at the time stated on the ticket. Late arrivals risk being unable to test that session.
• No personal calculators, phones, smartwatches, or scrap paper; scratch material is provided on-screen or on paper by the test site.
• The test is 180 minutes total across both sections (ELA and Math), computer-adaptive since fall 2026, with no penalty for an incorrect answer.
• There is no retake within the same admissions cycle. One sitting, one score, one cycle.

Accommodations for English Language Learners & Students With Disabilities

The digital SHSAT platform has embedded supports for English Language Learners and students with disabilities directly into the test interface, rather than requiring a separate paper accommodation process for most common needs.

Students with an active IEP or 504 plan should confirm testing accommodations through their school's IEP or 504 coordinator well before the registration deadline, since some accommodations need to be flagged during registration itself rather than requested on test day.

What Is the Discovery Program?

Discovery is a DOE initiative that gives economically disadvantaged students who score just below a specialized high school's official cutoff a conditional admissions offer, contingent on completing a required summer enrichment program.

• All eight SHSAT-based specialized high schools participate.
• Families cannot apply to Discovery directly. The DOE identifies eligible students automatically after SHSAT scores are released, based on score proximity to the cutoff and economic need indicators already on file.
• Placement is conditional on completing the assigned summer program; it isn't a guaranteed seat until that's finished.
